C’est Beau 2024
StreamC’est Beau Dance performance – Original Music
C’est Beau is an inclusive choreographic work by Compagnie DK-BEL and Compagnie 6eSens, choreographed by Sophie Bulbulyan and Cécile Martinez. Created as part of the Paris 2024 Cultural Olympiad, the work explores the idea of beauty through Charles Baudelaire’s vision of the beautiful as something intertwined with strangeness, chaos, pain and fragility, while adding “flight” as a symbol of hope and unity. Performed by dancers from different cultures, with and without disabilities, the piece offers a singular and deeply human perspective on beauty.
The performance premiered in Paris in 2024 with a live ensemble, featuring strings, clarinet, piano and voice alongside Tryfon Koutsourelis performing piano and electronics. For the project, Tryfon composed the original music, drawing inspiration from Baudelaire’s vision of beauty as something fragile, contradictory and transformative. Through dramatic melodies, rich harmonies and expressive contrasts, the music reflects the emotional complexity of the choreography, balancing moments of intimacy with powerful climaxes while embracing the imperfect and transient nature of beauty.
The success of the performance led to the music being developed into Tryfon’s album C’est Beau, where the compositions were reimagined as a standalone listening experience while preserving the artistic and philosophical essence of the original work.
The performance was broadcast nationally on France Culture TV on 20 August 2024, introducing the work to a wider audience and receiving an enthusiastic public reception.
